Florida Auctioneer “My Story” by: David D. Dybas

I’d like to start off by saying that I stumbled into the auction industry by accident and it changed my life, for the better of course. My name is David D. Dybas and while working my boring 9 to 5 job at a Central Florida retail nursery for the better part of ten years, I thought this is my life and I had better get used to it. That is until a, let’s say “lucky day” when a bunch of suits came into the store, sat us down and proceeded to inform us that the company had filed for bankruptcy, the stores would be liquidating all the assets and everyone would lose their jobs after the sale.

What do I do now? Quit and look for another job or stick with it for a guaranteed paycheck for the next couple of weeks? I picked the latter and after the sale was over, Rose White, who was also a former employee called and said that Moecker Auctions Inc. was having another liquidation sale in the area and asked if I was willing to help. At that time I was still unemployed and quickly said yes.

Florida Auctioneer “My Story” I Like it…

Fast forward 18 years and I am still working for Moecker Auctions Inc. and enjoying every minute of it. Not a day goes by that I regret the decision I made so many years ago and the diversity of what I get to encounter is beyond my wildest dreams. From one day doing an appraisal, to sitting down for an all-day strategic planning meeting with the FAA board of directors and the next day calling an auction for a company that resurfaced tennis courts.

Since joining the Moecker Auctions Inc. team in 1999, I have received my Florida Auctioneers License through Miami Dade College in 2011, designations of GPPA in 2007 and CES in 2011, both from the National Auctioneers Association Education Institute and most recently in 2015, my MPPA designation and my AMM designation in 2016.

Part of my daily assignments include on-site appraisals using the guidelines of USPAP for banks, attorneys and trustees including heavy equipment, industrial machinery, restaurants, electronics and furnishings. I am also involved with the setup of auctions and management of business liquidations.

Florida Auctioneer “My Story” membership

I am currently a member and serve on the board of directors for the Florida Auctioneers Association, am a member of the National Auctioneers Association, Fellowship of Christian Auctioneers International and the Tampa Bay Bankruptcy Bar Association.

The auction industry is my career and a very important factor in my life. But, more importantly is the family my wife Jessica and I have created during my time in the business which includes our 3 children. I am excited to see what 2017 brings for the FAA and hope to see you all again before the next convention.
